The award-winning Consortium Library at the University of Alaska
Anchorage is recruiting for the position of Head of Collection
Development. We are looking for an energetic, motivated, and
innovative librarian to join us in developing print, multimedia
and digital collections that are responsive to the needs of our
university communities.
Located near the Chugach Mountains in Alaska's largest city, the
library serves both the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) and
its community campuses with 19,000 students, and Alaska Pacific
University (APU), a private institution with 500 students. The
library is fully engaged in statewide programs and supports a
regional SirsiDynix integrated catalog system with the Anchorage
public library. It is a founding member of the Alaska Resources
Library and Information Services (ARLIS) and Alaska's Digital
Archives. The library's Health Sciences Information Service
offers a full range of library services to the medical community
across the state.
The Consortium Library has more than 807,000 bound volumes, more
than 590,000 microform units, and subscribes to approximately
4,000 print journals. The library is currently undergoing a
serial review aimed at reallocating funds for new resources. The
library has a funding allocation program for library materials
for new UAA faculty. The library licenses over 190 databases and
provides web access to the full text of more than 20,000 journals
and ebooks. It is a designated Foundation Center and a selective
federal depository. There are 19 FTE faculty positions and 26
FTE staff positions. Most of the librarians serve as subject
area selectors. The library's base budget is approximately $4.8M
which includes a collections budget of $1.4M.
UAA is a comprehensive metropolitan university consisting of the
main campus in Anchorage, four community campuses, and additional
sites in rural communities and on military installations. UAA
offers certificate, associate, baccalaureate, and graduate
programs in the arts, humanities, sciences, and professions.
Ph.D. programs in biological sciences and psychology are offered
at the UAA campus in partnership with the Universityof Alaska
Fairbanks.
The city of Anchorage with a population of 282,813 is the chief
business center for the State of Alaska. The spectacular
scenery, the vast array of wildlife, and outdoor recreational
activities around Anchorage are matched with a full range of
theater, symphony and fine arts events held in town. Summer is
full of light while the winters are less severe than in many
other major US cities.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Head of Collection Development is the
principal librarian overseeing the selection, evaluation, and
preservation of the library's print, multimedia and digital
collections. Job responsibilities include assisting with
university accreditation and program reviews and managing and
updating the library's collection policies, vendor contracts and
digital licenses. This position monitors the expenditures for
materials and digital resources and manages the library's
approval program. The Head of Collection Development coordinates
the work and training of all librarians with subject selection
assignments and chairs library selectors meetings. This position
is expected to develop and manage a funding formula for
allocating acquisitions funds to subject selectors and to work
closely with the Technical Services Department in ordering and
withdrawing materials.
The Head of Collection Development reports to the Dean of the
Consortium Library and serves on key library management teams.
The Head of Collection Development will seek opportunities for
cooperative collection development endeavors with other
university, municipal, state and federal agencies and will apply
for grant funding for collections and/or digital initiatives. In
coordination with the Dean of the Consortium Library, the Head of
Collection Development works with donors and on outreach
activities. The Head of Collection Development will provide
reference assistance and instructional support. Since this
position is a tenure track faculty appointment, the Head of
Collection Development will be expected to meet all library
faculty requirements for tenure and promotion.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Significant experience
with library collection development, acquisitions, and electronic
resources. Management and supervisory experience. Knowledge of
allocation formulas for acquisitions budgets.
EDUCATION REQUIRED: ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent.
PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Progressively
responsible management experience including supervision, donor
relations, acquisitions systems, collection assessment, outreach,
preservation, cooperative program planning and project
management. Demonstrated success obtaining grant funding.
Knowledge of emerging information technologies and digital
resources.
