Luna Imaging Inc.'s Insight® software allows organizations to manage, access, use, and present digital collections using the Internet.
Collections available to users on the Yale campus include: The Visual Resources Collection (25,000+ images), The Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library Insight Collection (11,000 + images), The David Rumsey Map Collection, the AMICO Collection and others.
For a complete list of collections in Insight see: http://www.library.yale.edu/libraries/diginsight.html
What version of Insight do I need?
There are two versions of Insight available to users on the Yale Campus. (Note: Use of Insight is limited to the Yale campus - if you are off-campus, you must use Yale PPP or the Yale VPN to access Insight.)
If you wish to view the most detailed view of each image (an image type called the 'SID') you must download and install the free Lizard Tech Express View plug-in. (Download Express View here)
The Insight Client (available for PC or Mac): The Insight client is written in Java and must be installed on a user's computer. It provides the rich user environment and full tool set for media collections. Users (if permissions allow), can perform searches, organize and group content, create presentations, and view text data relating to working with high-resolution images, audio or video files.
The Insight Client software is available on Library public workstations. The software can be downloaded from here: http://www.library.yale.edu/lso/workstation/instinsight.html.
The Insight Client software is also installed on ITS cluster machines.
A login and password are required to use the Insight client on machines other than those in the Library or ITS clusters. Students using Insight as a requirement for a course should receive the password from their professor. If you have lost the login and/or password or otherwise need them, contact the Visual Resources Collection at 432-2440 between 8:30-5:00pm Monday-Friday.
Note: If you wish to view Audio or Video files with Insight, you must install Quicktime Viewer 6.2 or later.
>Where do I get a password for Insight?
A login and password are required to use the Insight client on machines other than Library or ITS public workstations. Students using Insight as a requirement for a course should receive the password from their professor. If you have lost the login and/or password or otherwise need them, contact the Visual Resources Collection at 432-2440 from 8:30-5:00pm Monday through Friday.
Where can I use the Insight Client on campus?
The Insight Client version is available on all Library public workstations except for those at the Science Libraries, Medical and Divinity. It is also available on ITS Cluster machines. The login and password will be provided to the software automatically on these machines. (You do not need to know a login and password to use Insight on these machines.)
Do I need other software to view Audio and/or Video clips in Insight?
Apple's QuickTime Player software is used by Luna Insight to play video clips.
For PC's Quicktime is available from: http://www.library.yale.edu/lso/workstation/insight40.html>
For Macs, you should be able to download the most current version of QuickTime at http://download.yale.edu:8180/software/mac.jsp. If it isn't available there, you may have to try http://www.apple.com/quicktime/ to find the latest version.
Can I print images from Insight?
You can print thumbnails by using choosing 'Print' and selecting 'Print Thumbnails'. Images may be downloaded and printed by choosing 'File', 'Export Selected'.
The Insight server isn't responding. How do I report a problem?
Reporting server problems:
8:30 AM - 5:00 PM (Monday-Friday):
Call the Visual Resources Collection: 432-2440. Give a brief explanation
of your problem, e.g., the Insight server is not responding to your machine.
Report any error messages and provide contact information if you'd like
a reply.
5:01 PM - 8:29 AM (Monday-Friday); 24 hrs (Sat/Sun):
ITS Machine Room: 432-6506. Ask that
the ITS Library Projects Group Staff Member on call be paged and give
a brief explanation of the problem.
Where do I find more detailed documentation about Insight?

How do I access Insight off-campus?
Access to Insight is restricted to the Yale Campus, for off-campus access; use the Proxy
Server or the Yale VPN.
http://www.library.yale.edu/pubstation/proxy/proxy_about.html
Note: The Insight Client should only be used from off-campus if you are using a cable model or DSL connection. Response-time will be very slow if you attempt to use the Insight client via a dial-up connection.
How do I save my Insight images from a public (library) computer?
From public workstations, users may create groups in the client and save them to a floppy disk. When you are saving a group, you must type in a:\your group name (instead of just your group name), as the program defaults to the c drive.
If you are trying to save images to use on a computer that doesn't have Insight, save your
images as an HTML or create a Presentation in Insight and save it to HTML
or Powerpoint. For more information see:
