KEYWORD SEARCHING FOR MUSIC MATERIALS ON LOLA Based on a guide by Karen Jung, Southeastern Louisiana University Keyword searching allows you to combine terms and to search for words that appear anywhere in the description of the item (the bibliographic record) on LOLA. These words can be in the author, title, publication, subject or notes areas of the on-line record. Type: k= followed by the term or terms which you are searching k=piano Boolean operators such as "and", "or", and "not" are used to combine terms. k=mozart and symphony Truncation devices can be used when searching terms that start with the same string of letters but various endings are possible. If you want to search for everything beginning with the string "symphon" you would type: symphon? and retrieve symphonic, symphony, symphonies, etc. The following examples show ways to use truncation and/or Boolean operators. k=mozart and symphon? (this retrieves records that have BOTH the word "mozart" and word or words beginning with the letters "symphon".) k=opera? or cantata? (this retrieves records that either words beginning with "opera" or words beginning with "cantata".) k=lieder not schubert (this retrieves records that have the word "lieder" but excludes any of those that also have the work "schubert") LIMITING BY FORMAT If you want to limit your search to sound recordings (including LPs, CDs, cassette tapes, etc.) you can add the word sound to your keyword search k=mozart and symphon? and sound k=opera? or cantata? and sound k=lieder not schubert and sound If you want only printed music, do not use the word "music" with your search. Use the following guidelines instead: For music for more than one instrument, add the word "score" to your search k=trio and haydn and score For music for one instrument, add the name of the instrument to your search. k=sonata and beethoven and piano To limit your search to printed music for one instrument, add the phrase "not sound" to your search k=sonata and beethoven and piano not sound LIMITING YOUR SEARCH BY FIELD You can limit your search to particular fields in the on-line record. These include the author field (.au.), the title field (.ti.) and the subject fields (.su.). Be sure to include the periods indicated when using this type of search. This device is recommended when your retrieval without them is too large to be useful. To find works about Chopin, you want his name in the subject heading: k=chopin.su. To find works for piano by Chopin: k=chopin.au. and piano.su. SEARCHING CONTENTS NOTES Contents notes are not indexed. In other words, you cannot use a t= search for titles in a contents. Many popular music, jazz and song collections, whether in print or recorded, have individual titles listed only in content notes. Titles from this area in the record can be retrieved using a keyword search. If you are looking for a certain song, try a keyword search using as many words in the title as you remember AND are sure of: k=st louis blues and goodman k=pavarotti and o sole mio A word of caution is needed here: Not all on-line catalog records have contents notes, making comprehensive searching by keyword for items in collections impossible. Also remember that many lanuages and forms of titles might be used. Use your imagination when attempting a comprehensive search! If you have any questions, ask a librarian!
