Yale University Library Statistics (Holly)
· This is much more than just the ARL stats
· We are moving from the old-style print reports to a web-based
format requiring password access
· A few highlights from this years' report:
1. Reference Stats declined (a trend seen nationally). The decline may
in part be due to a move to sampling
2. Decline in dollars spent on student assistants
3. Number of electronic subscription reported for the first time
· Future development
o With Voyager coming, this is a good time to carefully review and adjust
measures and categories; Holly will be working with the Orbis2 "Report
Group" on this
· Danuta wants SQIC to consider what measures we need to have
in order to assess quality and suggests that we do some sampling to
see if proposed measures are relevant.
Discussion of "Mixed Media Processing" Draft Guidelines
(Joan)
· Joan distributed copies of the draft guidelines developed by
CDC
· This covers a variety of material types including floppy disks
or CD-ROMS that accompany monographs or serials and other items where
materials can not easily sit together on the same shelf
· Joan said the group has structured the policy to allow for
local variation between units for how they treat items once they have
been cataloged in a standard way
· A major issue is whether to have a single barcode or to have
multiple barcodes (one for each piece)
· Sue suggested we need to work through the whole process (cataloging
à processing à circulation). Security and preservation
should also be addressed
· Joan will make some revisions to this draft document based
on feedback and send the revised version to the group
SQIC Assessment Group Update (Holly)
· Three assessment projects are on the burners
1. Reference Group is planning a study of reference-type questions asked
at non-reference locations. 2nd week in April is tentative time period.
Will get data on content of questions, not just numbers.
2. SQIC will partner with the Orbis2 OPAC group to do a usability study
of the new OPAC. This will include screen design as well as language
and terminology.
3. Assessment Website - site is under development. It will include a
"tool kit" (examples, bibliography, general resources). Work
toward a standard way of asking questions.
· Other possible projects for the future include
1. Reader Survey
2. Staff projections of what users want
3. Feedback on Borrow Direct
4. Electronic Library Initiative (Getty "ELI" project)
Campus Delivery Report (Holly)
· Postponed for a future meeting
Other Business
· Alan - Audrey Novak asked who would develop training materials
for Orbis2
o This is something SQIC should address further
o Perhaps course creation software could be used for this training
o Contacts through Voyager ser group should be used to determine what
materials for training and usability assessment have been done in other
libraries
