Service Quality Improvement Council

Assessment Group
Minutes, July 27, 1999

Present: Katie Bauer, Martha Conway, Suzanne Lorimer, Danuta Nitecki

We discussed where we stand with the ARL definitions. For our next meeting, Martha will write an introductory statement, and add to this the ARL definitions for Reference, Instruction, Circulation and ILL data elements. This document will form the basis for beginning conversations with the groups on campus who gather and report these statistics. We want to emphasize:

  • Units may gather whatever statistics they wish. The ARL statistics, however, must be included in the data they gather. What they gather and report to ARL must conform to the ARL definitions.

  • We hope then to stimulate discussion about the other statistics units are keeping. Are they using the statistics they gather? If not, why are they keeping the statistics? Are there other things they would like to gather?

We will investigate providing methods for letting units report ARL statistics to a centralized database.

At the next meeting:

  1. We will make a final review of the ARL definitions, and discuss procedures for publicizing them.

  2. Will will report what he has found out about sampling methodologies.

Next Meeting: August 10, 1:00, in SML 409
