I. No annoucements.

II. Instruction Group.

Martha Smalley distributed a revised proposal from the Instruction Group for a general library-wide instruction program. The proposal features the appointment of 1) a task force consisting of a number of Instruction Group members as well as other interested library staff and 2) administrative assistance for clerical duties. The task force will be appointed for one academic year and will serve as a "pilot project" to determine 1) the length of time needed to complete tasks and 2) the amount of "professional" input and administrative support necessary.

Martha noted that advertisement of library instruction opportunities will be directed at all incoming students (undergraduates and graduates).

The Instruction Group seeks approval of this proposal from the SQIC on the understanding that the task force will operate on a "special project" basis. The Instruction Group will develop measures of success for the pilot project and will make further recommendations about how to carry out a system-wide instructional program.

The following suggestions were offered:

  • cast the task force as a subgroup of the Instruction Group when presenting the proposal to LMC;

  • announce the proposal to LMC as action taken by the SQI Council ;

  • present the problem not as a misperception as to where instruction coordination exists in the library system, but rather as an absence of the service altogether.

  • as part of the proposal, provide a definition of instructional program goals, indicate what the measurement of success will be, and include a statement on the expected outcomes of the pilot project.

Danuta will look into acquiring additional administrative support for the Task Force.

Task force membership was discussed. Appointments will attempt to reflect 1) the system-wide nature of the instructional program and 2) individual interest in promoting general instruction. Danuta will appoint task force members.

Paul will draft an announcement to LMC of the Instruction Group's proposal. SQI Council members will be asked to review it before presentaton.
