SQIC Assessment Group Notes and Action Items
Wednesday, October 24, 2001
11:00 - 12:00
SML Room 411
All present: Katie Bauer, Pamela Mann, Tony Oddo, Jennifer Weintraub,
Abe Parrish, Holly Grossetta Nardini (chair)
Notes from meeting:
1. Joint meeting with SQI Reference Group
· Suzanne Eggleston Lovejoy, Charlie Greenberg, Sandy Peterson,
and Martha Smalley from the SQI Reference Group joined us to discuss
their interest in a joint assessment project. This project would focus
on staff input, one of various kinds of data they will gather. They
would like to answer the question, "What questions are being fielded
in the Yale libraries when no reference librarians are available."
An additional area of interest is how those questions are being handled.
The Assessment Group offered to help explore the first question, but
indicated that the second question might need to wait for future assessment
projects.
· Holly will contact Sue Lorimer to develop an exact problem
statement. Pamela and Katie will independently develop a core list of
questions, that we will merge and pre-test to develop a quick checklist
of major questions. We'd like to be able to cover 85% of the questions
in a checklist, allowing staff members to focus on their interactions
with patrons, not the instrument. Jennifer will begin to consider the
logistics of sampling. We agreed to make this a priority and return
to the Reference Group with a draft and suggestions for how this project
can be accomplished.
2. Other work
· We agreed that we expect another assessment project to involve
interviwing/focus groups and Tony will continue to familiarize himself
with those methods. We expect the SQI Instruction Group to propose a
problem that lends itself to that methodology.
Action Items:
Holly: Record & post brief minutes, develop one case study/example
for "toolkit"-probably on focus group used for Delivery Improvement
Group
Jennifer: Consider how to effectively sample reference questions asked
outside of reference desks (days of week, times of day, which libraries
and locations)
Abe: shorten example of reference/instruction assessment and mark-up
for posting
Katie: work on short example of usability study for toolkit (distributed
some items at meeting), develop one draft of core questions received
at circ desks.
Tony: Find articles/chapters that explain research methodologies so
we can select two for this year.
Pamela: Develop one draft of core questions received at circ desks.
