Service Quality Improvement Council

Bibliographic Access Group
Minutes for the meeting of March 5, 2002
SML 409, 10-11:30

DRAFT

Present: S. Arakawa, N. Bouché, Chair (recorder), S. Crockford-Peters, T. Nellhaus, R. Richie, J. Swanekamp
Absent: Kalee Sprague

1. The minutes of the meeting of Feb 26 (Bouché) were approved
2. Nicole announced that the Orbis 2 OPAC displays still are not ready for our online review; we're hoping they will be by next week (March 12)
3. Catalog Management Policy for Missing Material -the group discussed the full draft which Nicole had distributed at the previous week's meeting. Points raised/discussed:
· We agreed to frame the discussion as a single recommendation, with mention of dissenting points of view, and not as a majority and minority opinion, as in the draft. Nicole will revise the document accordingly.
· Nicole will also reorganize the attachments.
· We agreed on the text "No longer available" as the message that will display in the OPAC when the last copy has been withdrawn.
· We agreed to clarify (by editing 2 bullets into 1) that this recommendation deals only with the question of OPAC display: display in the staff mode is a given, and not even really an option, as there is no way to actually delete a record from the online catalog.
· Other editorial changes were recommended to make clear what is current policy vs what BAG and this policy proposal are recommending.
· We agreed to drop the bullet re RLIN and OCLC practice, as not being germane to our main points and discussion; an interesting point, but it adds nothing substantive to the argument.
· Various other revision ideas were presented; Nicole will revise the document and redistribute for review for next week's meeting
4. Kerberized Telnet- still awaiting response from Library Systems (Martz)
5. OPAC Implementation:
· Nicole reported on some feedback received from the OPAC Implementation Group to our comments regarding Uniform Title labels in the OPAC displays. As follow up on the Uniform Title question, it was stated that the 130 should be hyperlinked. We discussed the possibility of having explanatory links from OPAC field labels to clarify the content/meaning of a specific field label, as one way to help patrons to understand what a uniform title is, and how an understanding of them might be useful to a researcher in searching the catalog and assessing results.
· We briefly discussed the "continued in whole/in part" questions (for 780 and 785) but deferred further discussion until next week, when hopefully we'd have a fuller reply from the OPAC Implementation Group on this and other outstanding label questions.

NEXT MEETING: March 12, 2002, 409 SML, 10:00 - 11:30
