Bibliographic Access Group
Minutes, 19 March 2002

Present: Arakawa (recording), Bouché, Nellhaus
Absent: Crockford-Peters, Richie, Sprague, Swanekamp

OPAC Implemenation

1. The group took a first look at Web Voyage in traindb to evaluate the revised labels. Some of the revisions had not yet taken place, e.g. 538.
2. The group went over the Web Voyage Label Group's documentation for the Long and Short views in detail. BAG was working with a marked up list of the original Label group proposals that indicated which BAG suggestions and other changes had been incorporated into the list of label revisions. (Distributed by N. Bouche at the meeting)
3. Instances where tags were appearing under 2 different labels were noted e.g. field 246. Agreement that Short view should include the label for Variant and related titles used in Long (there appears to be no such label/category in the Short view) and include the same fields used in Long.
4. Agreement that all series displaying in Long should display in Short. All series linking in Long should link in Short. Agreement to retain 580 in Short view under NOTES and remove from the In: label.
5. Agreement that the label Publications (581) can remain as is, based on N. Bouché's experience with its use in archival cataloging.
6. Agreement that including 6xx with certain indicators in Long/Short was questionable.
7. N. Bouché will work on a memo offering a rationale for a uniform title label.
8. There was reluctant agreement that using the label Description/Quantity was acceptable for both 300 and 256. (Description is generally understood in cataloging to be all of the bibliographic record minus the headings and most of the variant title access points, but it was noted that Description has been the label in place in NOTIS and that there are elements in field 300 that are not strictly speaking physical)
9. The NOTIS Webpac was viewed to see if the 511 first indicator made a difference. Different labels did appear to be in use for videos. S. Arakawa will check the tagging in NOTIS LTYL.
10. S. Arakawa will check CONSER documentation for guidelines on use of the Changed back to note generated by 785 08 and the 767 translation note
11. N. Bouché will prepare an updated response to the Label group proposals.
12. BAG members are asked to identify any appropriate fields in MARC 21 that may have been inadvertently left off the Label Group list.

NEXT MEETING: March 26, 2002
Recorder: Sue Crockford-Peters
Respectfully submitted,

Steven Arakawa
