Opening Comments for the 2000 Awards Ceremony
Danuta Nitecki, AUL, October 5th, 2000.
We are very pleased to inaugurate the Library's Service Quality
Award Ceremony. This is the first time the ceremony has taken
place in which we publicly recognize colleagues for service
above and beyond the call of duty, for service which exceeds
the general expectations of users, and which serves as a model
for other employees. This event is the
culmination of several activities to implement this key component
of service quality improvement -- employee recognition as a
way to help build an environment that values and promotes quality
service, its improvement and team work.
The SQI-C's Staff Issues Group, under the leadership of Sandy
Peterson, identified this component of a service quality improvement
program to be so important that it selected to address what
this might mean in the YUL as the group's first priority. The
group developed the concept and guidelines and recommended about
a year ago to the Council that such recognition become part
of the library's program. The Council quickly supported the
proposal and Paul Stuehrenberg, as its chair, brought it to
the LMC where it was approved March 1st, 2000. A selection committee
was formed to develop procedures and implement them for the
first round of awards this year. The charter selection committee
was created through nominations and vote within the SQIC to
represent 2 librarians, 1 manager, and 2 clerical and technical
employees; the committee selected its chair from among its membership.
This year's committee has been chaired by Charles Greenberg,
Head of Reference in the Medical Library; other members include:
Judith Parker, Access Services
Cesar Rodriguez, Curator of the Latin American Collection
Josephine Scalzo, Catalog Assistant in the History/Social Sciences
Cataloging Team
Marvin Tilman, Materials Assistant, Library Shelving Facility
Bernadette Cioffi served as an ex officio member from the LHR
The committee solicited nominations and references library wide,
deliberated over the pool and identified today's honorees for
the awards:
- For extended services within the library community
- For fostering cooperation and harmony in the workplace
- For strengthening the library infrastructure and operations
in support of service to readers.
The committees hard work is very much appreciated.
