Minutes of Meeting
15 May 2002
Present: S. Crockford-Peters, M. Gentry, H. Grossetta-Nardini, C. Jones,
F. Martz, D. Nitecki, K Parker, K. Reardon (guest), A. Solomon (chair),
J. Swanekamp, J. Williams
SQIC members considered a proposal by the SQI Bibliographic Access Group
(BAG) regarding Catalog Management Policy for Lost Materials. BAG recommended
that "the OPAC should display bibliographic information for titles
no longer held at Yale. In addition, it recommended that holdings for
records representing titles where the last copy has been withdrawn display
the message No longer available" S. Crockford-Peters and J. Swanekamp
reminded those present that this issue has been debated for several
years and a decision is urgently needed in light of Voyager implementation.
A lengthy discussion of pros and cons ensued. A vote was called and
the proposal was approved by a vote of 7 ayes, 2 nays, and 1 abstention.
The chair will report this decision at the 30 May LMC meeting.
K. Reardon led a discussion about removal of the block on Yale email
on workstations in the Franke Periodical Reading Room (PRR). She noted
that the cluster had become a kind of 'internet caf' in which non-Yale
patrons have monopolized workstations with large monitors to conduct
email and surf the web. By enabling Yale domain email, more Yale readers
would be inclined to take advantage of the PRR cluster. SQIC unanimously
approved the removal of the block.
K. Reardon also agreed to investigate a workstation configuration that
would limit access to only the WebVoyage OPAC.
