The Yale University Library Off-Campus High-Efficiency Shelving Facility
is scheduled to open by mid-1998. It addresses a long-standing need for more
library shelving at the same time it strengthens the libraryºs ability
to preserve its collections and insures access to them for research and
instruction. The success of off-campus shelving services depends on many
factors, including:
-
thoughtful selection of infrequently-used materials for off-campus shelving;
-
availability of on-line records for all material held off-campus and an effective
on-line shelf list to facilitate remote browsing;
-
excellent delivery services to readers who need to consult or browse through
items shelved in the Facility;
-
open and informative communications with Yale scholars and students about
the availability of library collections and shelving services.
These factors will be reviewed by members of the Library administration and
the Advisory Committee on Library Policy during public forums for faculty,
students, and interested readers. These sessions will be organized to share
current plans and to invite discussion among colleagues in related disciplines.
In preparation, please read the
Task Force Report
and the Selection
Policy, available on this web site and in CCL Reserves. Also available
in CCL Reserves is a video tape of the Harvard Depository.
