  • Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules
Second Edition (2002 Revision with 2005 Update)
  • (AACR2)

  • Rules designed for use in the construction of catalogs and other lists in general libraries of all sizes, covering the description of, and the provision of access points for, all library materials commonly collected at the present time.

  • v v v

  • Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials (Books)
  • (DCRM(B))

  • Rules designed to provide instructions for cataloging printed books, pamphlets, and single-sheet publications of any age or type of production whose rarity, value, or interest make special description necessary or desirable.

  • NOTE: DCRM(B) is based on AACR2 rules and should be not be thought of as a replacement for AACR2, but rather as more detailed guidelines to guide the cataloger far more strictly.
3
Primary Differences in Cataloging Printed Material
using AACR2 and DCRM(B)
  • AACR2

  • allows normalized description, highlighting basic features of a publication

  • regularized transcription

  • more suitable when an item is of significance primarily for its content rather than artifactual value
  • DCRM(B)

  • emphasizes a precise record of the library's holdings of an item

  • produces more faithful transcriptions and more accurate physical descriptions

  • more suitable when it is important to provide distinctions between issues, bibliographical variants, or individual copies

4
Encoding Levels: DCRM(B) Minimal vs. Core vs. Full
