NOTES
"Uncut" is not the same as "unopened."Glaister, G.A. Encyclopedia of the book gives the following definition of these terms:
- Uncut:
- a book is said to be uncut if the edges of the paper have not been cut with the plough or guillotine.
An uncut book made from laid paper still has the deckle edges. An uncut copy of a book is noted in a copy-specific note.
- Unopened:
- a book sold with the bolts uncut, to be hand-slit by the purchaser with a paper-knife. It is then said to be opened.
Example:
590 ‡a BEIN [call no.]: Uncut.
