FOR DISCUSSION AT LMC MEETING October 1996 ____________________________________
Electronic Publishing and Collections Specialist
General description:
Through a combination of technical, Collection Development, and communications expertise and skills, the successful candidate will undertake three related types of activities:
(1) Support the Yale Library's electronic Collection Development and deployment activities, presenting the AUL-CD and Systems Department with a clear implementation path to electronic content resources that are purchased or leased (content already in house but not yet effectively presented, as well as content that will be selected). Success in this area will be measured by cost-effective, strategically-conceived installations that support Yale's study, teaching, and research needs.
(2) Take a lead in creating strategic partnerships between the Yale Library and information producers (which can be faculty or publishers) in order to develop successful electronic publications. Measures of success will include: identifying sources of funding for targeted e-projects, bringing together the right partners, creating useful and important content, and helping to promote and assess its use.
(3) Serve as a technical collections resource for the Library's electronic consortial activities. The Yale Library (Collection Development) is working to build a Northeast Research Libraries Consortium whose role will be to select, negotiate, and obtain reduced prices for access to or purchase of electronic products. There is down-the-line potential to become, perhaps, a re-seller of e-information to regional institutions, if Yale were to choose and develop such a path.
Examples of collections, projects, or tasks that may be addressed as part of this position:
o Loading CLR tapes, certain reference materials. o Making widely available full-text electronic databases (such as Chadwyck-Healey).
o Exploring project opportunities with Yale University Press. o Resource to publishing aspects of "faculty support" program. o Delivering Yale e-resources to regional institutions under contract. o Supporting technical needs arising out of NERL licensing activities.
