Special Collections Subcommittee meeting
September 21, 2004

Present: Susan Brady, Richard Boursy, Tom Hyry, Ulla Kasten, Martha Smalley, Toby Appel, Libby Van Cleve

Items of discussion:

1) Feedback re. Special collections table at Graduate Student Fair, August 26, 2-4 pm

• Seemed like a worthwhile endeavor; many questions asked. Needing electricity for video caused location of table to be less than ideal.

2) Numismatic collection will be available to public again – to be called the Collection of Coins and Medals and based in Art Gallery. We have been asked to link to information about the collection when a URL becomes available.

3) Dates and venue for next Special Collections Fair.

• October 2005 proposed as date for next fair
• We will investigate the possibility of using the President’s Room in Woolsey Hall as a venue, on the grounds that it might be easier to attract more students to attend there.

4) Other publicity possibilities were discussed. We decided to see if we can use the exhibit cases in the SML corridor again in May/June 2005 for a Special Collections exhibit on some mutually acceptable theme. Martha will inquire re. the schedule.

4) History Senior Essays handouts were examined.

• Customized handouts have been for the following colloquium topics (plus a generic handout for other topics):
• US: Colonial and Early Republic (to 1820)
• US: 19^th Century (1820-1914)
• US: 20^th Century
• US: African American and Ethnic American
• Europe: Great Britain
• Europe: Modern Europe (19^th and 20^th century)
• Topical: History of Science & Medicine
• Topical: Women and Gender

Next meeting will be October 12, 2004, 11:00 a.m. in SML 411 at which time we expect Rich Szary to join us to discuss the Mellon proposal.
