Special Collections Subcommittee Minutes

Memo
Date: May 20, 1997
To: Ann Okerson, Max Marmor
From: Chris Weideman
Re: CDC Special Collections subcommittee in April

In attendance: Toby Appel, Bridget Burke, Ken Crilly, Christine de Vallet, Elisabeth Fairman, Diane Kaplan, George Miles, Martha Smalley, David Walls, Chris Weideman, Richard Williams.

We met on April 29th:

1. We reviewed the piece written by the subcommittee to encourage donors and researchers to support special collections care. For the time being, each unit will use the piece in the manner best suited for them. Manuscripts and Archives, for instance, will tailor the piece so that it is focused on preservation of its own collections and will probably place copies in the reading room and include it with letters to potential donors.

2. There was a wide-ranging discussion of photographs and copyright. Subcommittee members shared their own experiences and opinions on the questions raised. At the end of the discussion, members determined that at this point in time there is no need for additional attention to this area.

3. We discussed the CONFU guidelines and Max Marmor's idea for a symposium in the Fall. We are interested in learning more about both and have arranged for Max and Ann to speak to the subcommittee on Thursday, June 5, from 10 am - 12. That will be our last meeting before the Fall.
