Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Reference

You can query ORBIS, the Yale Library Online Catalog, for texts on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) using the following Subject keywords:

  • Geographic information systems
  • Geographic information systems Handbooks
  • Spatial analysis
  • Arcview
  • ArcGIS
  • Geography Data processing
  • Geography Data processing Periodicals

The Map Collection is building what we hope will eventually be a comprehensive reference collection on the subject of Geographic Information Systems and their application. If you have suggestions or requests for new acquisitions, please feel free to use the Recommendation Form to let us know your needs. The following is a selection of some of the titles available here in The Map Collection. The Map Collection also maintains a complete set of the printed documentation for ESRI's suite of GIS Software.

The Map Collection and Other collections at Yale maintain subscriptions to a number of GIS & GIS-Related Periodicals, most of which can be accessed ONLINE!

Introductory Texts:

These texts are excellent introductions to the concepts and skills necessary for effective GIS use. All of these texts are available for use in the Map Collection, although they do not circulate.

Getting to Know ArcGIS Desktop

Getting to Know ArcGIS Desktop: The Basics of ArcView, ArcEditor, and ArcInfo Updated for ArcGIS 9 (Paperback)

Robert Burke, Eileen Napoleon, Tim Ormsby

Publisher: Esri Press; Second Book and CD-ROM edition (June 1, 2004)

This is the first book you should open if you have no previous experience with GIS and specifically with ArcGIS software. Many patrons find that they prefer to have their own copy of this book, so we have provided a link to Amazon.com, above. Included with the book is a fully functioning 180-day trial version of ArcView 9.1 software on CD-ROM, as well as a CD of data for working through the book's exercises. Once installed and registered, the single-use software cannot be reinstalled, and the time limit cannot be extended.

Designing better maps

Designing better maps : a guide for GIS users

Cynthia A. Brewer.

Edition: 1st ed.

Published: Redlands, Calif. : ESRI Press, c2005.

One of the great disadvantages of the huge explosion of GIS use has been the proliferation of hideous maps. This is a much needed text on the creation of maps that communicate their intended message both effectively and beautifully.

Getting to know ArcObjects

Getting to know ArcObjects : programming ArcGIS with VBA

Robert Burke.

Published: Redlands, Calif. : ESRI Press, c2003.

Can't find the ArcGIS tool that calculates the spatial parameter you need? Start here to learn how to customize and extend the ArcGIS interface and create custom tools to make your analysis workflow more efficient. This is an excellent introduction that assumes little or no previous programming experience, although we would suggest that you also find an introductory text on VBA if you plan to do any extensive programming for ArcGIS.

GIS modeling in raster

GIS modeling in raster

Michael N. DeMers.

Published: New York : J. Wiley, c2002.

A thorough and concise entry into the powerful tools available for modeling phenomenon using the Raster Data Model. While not dealing with the ArcGIS software suite specifically, this text covers the use of Map Algebra, which is fully implemented in the Spatial Analyst extension for ArcGIS.

Making maps : a visual guide to map design for GIS

Making maps : a visual guide to map design for GIS

John Krygier, Denis Wood.

Published: New York : Guilford Press, c2005.

Effective communication of spatial phenomenon ends with good map-making. This is another excellent volume on the creation of maps that get your point across without making your audience cringe.

Statistical analysis of geographic information with ArcView

Statistical analysis of geographic information with ArcView
GIS and ArcGIS

David W.S. Wong, Jay Lee.

Edition: Fully rev. & updated.

Published: Hoboken, N.J. : John Wiley & Sons, Inc., c2005.
