ESRI GIS Software Products
Yale University, through a collaboration with several departments and
collections, maintains an Higher Education site license for the full suite
of ESRI Geographic Information Systems software. This site license grants
an Yale University license to use a large collection of ESRI software
products on an unlimited number of the University's computers on campus.
The software may be used for teaching, research, and administrative purposes.
Any form of commercial use is explicitly prohibited. Distribution
of the software to licensed end users on campus and other administrative
maintenance of the Site License are handled by Yale University Map Collection
GIS Services, at Sterling Memorial Library.
The ArcGIS Site License Program
The ArcGIS Site License includes unlimited use of the following ESRI
software products and benefits:
- Desktop
GIS
- ArcInfo 9.1, 9.2
- ArcEditor 9.1, 9.2
- ArcView 9.1, 9.2
The ArcGIS Suite of software is licensed at three different levels,
shown above, with the greatest number of features available at the
ArcInfo license level. This is conceptually similar to how MS Office
is licensed at the Home, Professional and Enterprise levels. Yale's
licensing agreement provides licensing at the ArcInfo level for
all installations capable of connecting to our campus license server.
For off-campus use of ArcGIS, we are able to provide ArcGIS at the
ArcEditor licensing level for machines (laptops, off-campus Yale
research facilities, off-network machines, etc...) that are not
able to connect to the license server for some reason.
- ArcGIS extensions: ArcGIS Spatial Analyst, ArcGIS
3D Analyst, ArcGIS Geostatistical Analyst, ArcGIS Publisher, ArcGIS
Schematics, ArcGIS Survey Analyst, ArcScan for ArcGIS, ArcGIS Military
Analyst, Maplex for ArcGIS, and ArcGIS Network Analyst
- Server
GIS
- ArcGIS Server
- ArcIMS
- ArcIMS Route Server (By request only. Data is
not included and must be purchased separately.)
- ArcGIS Server License with ArcGIS Server Spatial
Analyst extension, ArcGIS Server 3D Analyst extension, and ArcGIS
Server Network Analyst extension options
- Developer
GIS
- ArcGIS Engine Developer Kit
- Mobile
GIS
- ArcPad Application Builder including ArcPad
ArcPad is software for mobile GIS and field mapping applications
using handheld and mobile devices. ArcPad provides field-based personnel
with the ability to capture, analyze, and display geographic information,
without the use of costly and outdated paper map books.
ArcPad Application Builder is the development framework for building
custom ArcPad applications for mobile GIS.
- Business GIS
- Other GIS Software
- ArcView
3.x Products
- ArcView 3.x (for Windows)
- ArcView 3.0a (for Macintosh) `
- ArcView 3.x extensions: ArcView Spatial Analyst,
ArcView Network Analyst, ArcView 3D Analyst, ArcPress for ArcView,
and StreetMap 1.1
ArcView 3.x is the original Windows version of ESRI's GIS Software.
It has largely been supplanted by the ArcGIS 9.x series, although
some Yale users still depend upon it , so we continue to support the
software at a minimal level.
- Added Benefits
- Virtual Campus—Unlimited
seats, Standard Subscription (These are primarily technology courses
that teach ESRI software and the Spatial Analysis of Geohazards course.)
Obtaining GIS Software at Yale
Yale GIS users may install ESRI software on any Yale-owned machine. The
installation package for ArcGIS 9.1 (ArcInfo-level) has been made available
through the Yale Software
Library to faculty and staff to download. For support in the installation
process, including how to connect to the license server, contact Yale
GIS Support Specialist, Stacey
Maples.
User who require the non-networked ArcEditor version of ArcGIS should
contact The Map Collection for consultation.
Yale's site-license does not allow the installation of GIS software on
the personal computers of students, faculty or staff. Students and others
who find that they need a version of ArcGIS for they personal use for
coursework should contact the Yale GIS Support Specialist, Stacey
Maples, to find out how to obtain a 1-year student licensed version
of ArcGIS at the ArcView licensing level.
Yale Computer Labs/Clusters with ArcGIS
Currently, ArcGIS installations are widely distributed across the Yale
Campus. Below you can find a table of the major computer labs that have
installed ArcGIS on their workstations. To find a Yale Computer Cluster
with ArcGIS software, use the
Software Search on the Cluster
Support Services website.

The Kline Science Library
has recently purchased licensing for a new, and very powerful, demographic
mapping tool, SimplyMap.
SimplyMap is a web-based
mapping application that lets users quickly create professional-quality
thematic maps and reports using powerful demographic, business, and marketing
data. SimplyMap turns complex data into valuable information that is easily
accessed through an innovative and user-friendly interface.
Of particilar interest to Yale GIS users is the ability prepare and download
shapefiles of demographic data for use in ArcGIS Spatial Analysis Software.
With SimplyMap, users can:
- Access thousands of demographic, business, and marketing data variables.
- Develop interactive thematic maps and export high-resolution images
to word processing or presentation software.
- Select, sort, and compare data across multiple locations and build
custom reports that can be exported to a spreadsheet for additional
functionality.
- Explore historical census data to understand how regions change over
time and use estimates and projections to analyze current and future
trends.
- Make informed personal and business-related decisions. Questions like
“what are the social and demographic characteristics of my neighborhood?”
and “where should I locate my retail store?” are quickly
answered with SimplyMap.
- Combine locations and search for areas based on specific criteria.

Other GIS Software
Of course, ESRI is not the only GIS software available. There are many
GIS & GIS-related softare package that users might find useful. Below
are a few of the packages that we find the most useful. For a more comprehensive
list of GIS software links, see the GIS
Software Links Page.
