United States Geology Survey Maps

Scale map of New Haven A USGS 1:24,000 scale map of New Haven, revised 1972

As a depository for federal documents, the Map Collection receives USGS topographic maps covering the entire United States. The most familiar are the 7.5-minute, 1:24,000 scale maps. These maps are revised periodically and the Collection retains earlier issues.

The Collection also contains 15-minute, 1:62,500 scale maps. This was the scale at which much of the country was mapped before the 1:24,000 scale became standard during the 1950's. Alaska is still being mapped at this scale. In addition, much of the U.S. has been mapped by the USGS at scales of 1:50,000, 1:100,000, and 1:250,000. Maps and charts covering the United States are also available at scales of 1:500,000 and 1:1,000,000.
