Balbinus (d. 238), a Roman orator, poet, and statesman, was appointed by the senate as joint emperor of Rome in 238, the same year in which he was murdered by soldiers of the Praetorian Guard. This sestertius, originally equivalent to the value of about four asses, was among the many hundreds of ancient coins in Walpole's collection at Strawberry Hill.
