Bucolica, Georgica, et Aeneis
Artist: Virgil (Publius Vergilius Maro ) (70-19 B.C.)
Title: Bucolica, Georgica, et Aeneis
Description: Birmingham, J. Baskerville, 1766

This volume was bound by William Edwards (1723-1808), founder of the famous firm of binders and booksellers, Edwards of Halifax. The book was decorated by his son and successor, James (1756-1816). Vellum bindings decorated with so-called Etruscan borders and with paintings on their covers were the firm's hallmark, a closely guarded secret that was patented in1785. Another hallmark of the firm was that of a painted view on the fore-edge of the book, visible only when the text block was held aslant. In this volume the fore-edge painting shows a view of Chatsworth.
