| Artist: | After Henry William Bunbury (1750-1811) |
| Title: | The Kitchen of a French Post House, 1771 |
| Description: | Hand-colored engraving |
In criticizing the religiosity, stinginess and conceit of the French, Bunbury shows more tolerance than did Hogarth in his Gate of Calais. Walpole compared the two artists to Bunbury's advantage, calling him Athe second Hogarth and first imitator who ever fully equalled his original; and who, like Hogarth, has more humour when he can draw from the sources of nature with more spirit than from the ideas of another.
