Title: Mary Berry's Parasol, ca. 19th century
Description: Silk, lace and ebony with tortoiseshell figural handle

In 1852 when she was eighty-nine, Mary Berry visited Queen Victoria at Buckingham Palace. Afterwards, the Queen wrote, "She is in perfect possession of all her strong intellect--is neither blind nor deaf, and very agreeable, witty and amusing, not only remembering all that happened in the past, but also 'au courant' of all the political events of the present day; very plain-spoken and warm-hearted. She was very complimentary towards me, but said she was no flatterer."
