| Description: | Pen and ink In: Horace Walpole (1717-1797) A Description of the Villa of Mr. Horace Walpole Strawberry Hill Press, 1774 |
Walpole acquired Thomas Kirgate as his printer in 1765. In time he became his master's secretary, librarian, and curator of prints. His drawing of the placement and numbered identification of the pictures in the Gallery is tipped in the Spencer copy of A description of the villa. It was Walpole's "working copy" of the catalogue of his collections and it contains in manuscript all the additions that he later incorporated into the revised edition of 1784. His notes are on almost every page and there are fifty additional drawings and text.
