Only a few hundred yards north of Strawberry Hill, Pope's house was acquired after his death by Sir William Stanhope, who made considerable alterations by 1760. The dome in the center is Lady Ferrer's summer house; to the right is Barnaby Backwell's and next to it is Dr. Battie's house. Walpole commissioned his neighbor Samuel Scott, who became known as the English Canaletto, to paint this view. In his priced copy of the 1774 Description of Strawberry Hill, Walpole noted he paid ,l5.l5.0 for the painting and that it was hung in the Green Closet.
