At the beginning of the Short Notes of his life, Walpole recalled that he Alearned . . . to draw of Bernard Lens, Master to the Duke [of Cumberland] and Princesses. When he was twenty-one, Walpole signed and dated this drawing H. Walpole. 1738 on the clump of stones in the left foreground. The watercolor is reversed from the original and some of the figures were not copied. It was later displayed in his bedroom at Strawberry Hill.
