In 1780 Walpole wrote, "I endeavoured to give our antiquaries a little wrench towards taste--but it was in vain. Sandby and our engravers of views have lent them a great deal--but there it stops." The view from the south shows the completed main building, with the Great Cloister to the west and the Gallery above it designed by John Chute in 1760.
