| Artist: | After Willey Reveley (1760-1799) |
| Title: | South View of the Castle of Otranto, ca. 1785 |
| Description: | Watercolor |
This is a copy of an original drawing of the castle that was given to Walpole by Lady Craven. He wrote to thank her on 27 November 1786, "Nay, but the drawing is so satisfactory, that there are two small windows, one over another, and looking into the country, that suit exactly to the small chambers from one of which Matilda heard the young peasant singing beneath her. Judge how welcome this must be to the author; and thence judge, Madam, how much you must have obliged him!" This close version of Reveley's view is from Richard Bull's extra-illustrated copy of the 1765 edition.
