| Artist: | Alexander Pope (1688-1744) |
| Title: | Twickenham Church from Pope's Garden, ca. 1721 |
| Description: | Pencil In: Homer, Iliad, Amsterdam, 1707 |
To distract himself from the task of translation which paid for the improvements to his villa, Pope would make rough sketches of either the villa itself or of other Twickenham buildings in the margins of his Homer manuscripts. This drawing of Twickenham Church where his family is buried is in the fly-leaf of vol. 1 of his copy of Homeri Opera quae exstant omnia, Graeca et Latina. Pope's notes indicate his ownership of the book and that he finished the translation in February 1719-20. Towards the bottom of the page, the notes change to Walpole's hand. This copy is from the Glass Closet of Walpole's library where his rarest collections were kept.
