In 1761 Walpole commissioned the glass painter William Peckitt of York to make the "Beautiful old & stained glass at the top of the five windows in the Gallery," noted in the Strawberry Hill Sale Catalogue of 1842. Peckitt took about a year to complete the pieces, which the Catalogue further mentions as including "all the quarterings of the Family of Walpole, very rich in colour, and embellished by a variety of fine old mosaic glass."
