Nine Jettons and PLates of James I and his Family
Artist: Simon Pass (?1595-1647)
Title: Nine Jettons and Plates of James I and his Family
Description: Silver

Like most eighteenth-century collectors who had been on the Grand Tour, Walpole began with classical antiquities, amassing hundreds of Greek and Roman coins and medals in gold, silver and brass. However, by the age of twenty-four he began concentrating on English examples, fast becoming one of the leading English numismatists. These portraits of James I and his family were kept in the Tribune.

The ovals on the left and right are respectively, James I (1566-1625) and his wife Anne of Denmark (1574-1619). The oval in the center shows James and Anne with their younger son, the future Charles I (1600-1649).

The central round portrait is that of Henrietta Maria, wife of Charles I (1609-1669)

The three round portraits in the top row represent from left to right: Mary, Queen of Scots (1542-1587), her husband Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley (1545-1567), and Elizabeth, Queen of Bohemia (1596-1662).

In the bottom row, the two round portraits are from left to right: Frederick, King of Bohemia (1596-1632), and Charles I (1600-1649).
