| Chief at Celebration, outside Tamale, Northern Gold Coast, 1952-1953. (17) Sitting atop his horse, this Dagomba was on his way to being invested as a district level chief. His horse is richly caparisoned and he is surrounded by retainers, drummers, and other musicians. The man in the left corner is playing a Ghanaian version of the 23-string kora from Mali. This chief holds an umbrella, a symbol of his office. These ceremonies still continue today. |
