The University Library, which is a highly valued partner in teaching and research at the University, has more than 11 million volumes housed in the Sterling Memorial Library and 22 school and departmental libraries. Near East Collection -- Yale University Library: (http://www.library.yale.edu/neareast/) Yale was the first among American colleges and universities to support and encourage the study of Arabic literature and Islamic culture. When the first professor of Arabic, Edward Elbridge Salisbury, was appointed in 1841, he was the only scholar of his kind in the United States. For over a century, Yale has developed an extensive collection of Near Eastern library materials to support Arabic and Near Eastern Studies at Yale. At present, the collection is considered among the most important Near East collections in this country, and in the world. Project AMEEL -- Yale University Library: (http://www.library.yale.edu/ameel/) The Project AMEEL team at Yale University Library, leading a partnership of committed international collaborators, will design and construct a digital library that focuses on the Middle East. This project is grant-funded was awarded under the U.S. Department of Education's Title VI TICFIA Program, which fosters innovative techniques or programs that address national teaching and research needs in international education and foreign languages by using technologies to access, collect, organize, preserve, and widely disseminate information on world regions and countries other than the United States (http://www.ed.gov/programs/iegpsticfia/index.html).
