Divided by period and research method. An index is included. Very specific to British archaeology.

Impressive collection of articles and appendices that includes much information of use to anthropologists. Has nine volumes of alphabetically arranged topical entries and biographies; the tenth volume has a 100 page glossary, a list of the languages of the world, a classified list of entries (including anthropology and languages, and biographies arranged by category), and indices for names and subjects.

Champion, Sara. A Dictionary of Terms and Techniques in Archaeology. New York: Facts on File, 1980.
Serves as a pocket guide to archaeological terms. It is more appropriate for laymen than professionals, but is useful for ready reference.

Crystal, David. An Encyclopedic Dictionar y of Language and Languages. Oxford: Blackwell Publishers, 1992
Dictionary that serves as a good companion to The Encyclopedia of Language and Linguistics, with longer, more detailed entries for topics and concepts. Includes a few short biographies of major figures.

More like a dictionary than an encyclopedia. Short articles (approximately 1,400) cover very basic information on anthropology and a few bibliographies are included.

Organizes topical articles into sections by humanity, culture, and social life. Contains 38 articles written by anthropologists. Intended to be read, not consulted for ready reference. Each article contains a bibliography. It serves as a good overall view of general subjects of anthropology. Indexed.

Jelks, Edward B. and Juliet C. Jelk s, eds. Historical Dictionary of North American Archaeology. New York: Greenwood, 1988.
Contains information on prehistoric cultures, sites, and artifacts of North America. Most entries are short and some include references to definitive works on the subject. Use relies on the index to find all relevant entries. The index, however, is poorly cross-referenced and not comprehensive. Not all entries are indexed. Since it is the only source of its kind, become very familiar with its organization and the limitations of its index to use it effectively.

The definitive guide to the subject and without parallel in its comprehensive treatment. Each volumes devoted to a geographic area. Each entry has specific descriptive information on the culture, including, but not restricted to: ethnonym, location, physical environment, demography, linguistic affiliation, economy, kinship, marriage and family, political organization, and religion. Each volume includes an ethnic names index, bibliographies, filmographies, maps, and a list of cultures. The final volume includes the indices, bibliographies, and lists.

Each concept receives lengthy and in-depth treatment and is accompanied by an extensive bibliography. Contains subject and name indices. Most useful as an introduction to these three anthropological fields.

Seymour-Smith, Charlotte. Dictionary of Anthropology. Boston, MA: G.K. Hall, 1986.
Contains concise articles on subjects; its format resembles an expanded dictionary. Biographies are included which focus on twentieth century socio-cultural anthropologists.

Articles are signed and contain further readings. Cross references are included within the body of the encyclopedia. In addition to subjects, the encyclopedia has biographies of major figures. More scholarly than The Encyclopedia of Evolution: Humanity's Search for Its Origins.

Very short biographical entries on people, born before 1920, who have made a contribution to anthropology. Entries include birth and death dates, place of birth, profession, contributions to anthropology, and citations to biographies. Some important anthropologists have been omitted. Includes an index and additional tables with number of anthropologists by country, year of birth, year of death, and career.

A lengthy biographical source for major figures written by anthropologists and librarians. Entries range from several paragraphs to several pages and contain a list of major works and sources of additional biographical information. Includes a short glossary and an index of names, places, ethnic and institutional names, and major subjects.

Contains color pictures and excellent maps. Articles are long, general and descriptive. Glossary useful for ready reference. Arranged by regions of the world, subdivided by subjects. Covers early humans through historical times. Copiously illustrated, with bibliographies and an index.

Covers topics and problems of current interest and recent publications in anthropology. Review articles are written by specialists. Although international in scope, is slanted toward English language sources.

In contrast to the Annual Review of Anthropology, contains critical reviews of new books, not current topics. Includes responses by the authors of the books. Occasionally reviews non-book materials.
