Arts of the Book Collection
The Arts of the Book Collection (AOB) / Arts Library Special Collections Reading Room is a research facility housed in the Sterling Memorial Library. Wooden bookshelves with decorative carvings hold the collection, which contains both examples of and reference materials about the arts related to the book. Topics such as binding, book history, illustration, calligraphy, graphic design, paper making and decorative papers, typography and more are represented. Contemporary examples of artists' books and fine printing are housed alongside more traditional publications. AOB is the home to several named collections relating to persons who have significantly contributed to the book arts. AOB is a non-circulating collection that serves both Yale and the wider book arts communities.

Additionally, as the Arts Library Special Collections Reading Room, all Arts Library Special Collections materials housed at the Library Shelving Facility (LSF) can be viewed here. This includes the Faber Birren Collection of Book on Color and Special Collections from the Drama Library. These materials will be indicated in Yale's online catalog with the designation "LSF - Request for use at Arts of Book"

CURRENT EXHIBITION

Collaboration: The Art of Working Together
April 9 to June 30, 2008

In the field of book arts collaboration is key: the binder, the printer, the illustrator and other artists work together to produce a finished book. Another common method of collaboration is artists and writers working together to have their ideas joined in the book format. This small exhibition features works that are made in the spirit of collaboration, with the contributors using the book format to place their ideas in dialogue with each other.

This will be the last exhibition in the Arts of the Book Collection Reading Room in Sterling Memorial Library. We will be moving to the newly renovated Arts Library in late Summer 2008.

Faber Birren Collection of Books on Color
Image Database

To facilitate use of the collection, the Arts Library has created a stand-alone image database for the Birren Collection. The database contains records for all items in the collection, with categories assigned that allow researchers to easily see groups of related materials. Searching by individual details (author, title, etc) is also possible. Keyword searching should still be done in the library’s online catalog, Orbis. As the database is still in development, not all works have images. Nor will all works have images upon completion as some books are text only. Each book with significant visual material has from one to three images representing the content of the work.

Book Arts Ephemera Database
Ephemera files provide important information on activities and people that are currently exhibiting but not yet in the limelight. These files also document lesser known artists and exhibition spaces. AOB holds 14 linear feet and growing of materials that have been collected since the early 1980's on various contemporary artists and presses. This database represents a small sample of our ephemeral holdings for which we have received permission to post on the Internet.
