User's Guide to ARTstor

What is ARTstor?
ARTstor is a database and presentation tool with individual and cross-collection searching capabilities. ARTstor currently contains over 300,000 images within several different collections.

Registering with ARTstor
If you wish to save images, create image groups or export images, you must register with ARTstor. To register with ARTstor, click "Register" on the right hand side of the search page. You will be prompted for your Yale e-mail address and a password of your choice. Once you register, your subsequent logins will prompt the message "Welcome: <your e-mail address>" in the lower left-hand side of the screen.

What can you do with ARTstor?

Search, View, and Download Images
To search and view ARTstor images, click "Search and Browse for Images" on the ARTstor home page. Be sure to select a collection or "All Collections" from the pull-down menu before you begin.

Your results will appear in thumbnail format. Click on a specific image and zoom in for greater detail.

You can zoom in and out by using the controls in the lower left-hand corner. Notice the menu that appears in the lower right-hand corner of the image. Clicking on the icon will retrieve information about the digital image and about the original art object itself. It is possible to enlarge multiple images to view side by side.

If you want to download an image, click on the icon. A pop-up window will appear, asking you to accept the conditions of use. To download the image, you must select "I accept." Click "yes" in the next dialog box. The Save dialog box will appear; rename the file if need be and click "save". Your image will be saved at a lower resolution, in "postcard" format. Once your image is saved, you may export it into a word document, Powerpoint, etc. Be aware that the image quality will be significantly lower than in ARTstor.

Saving Image Groups
You can save images to ARTstor groups once you register. These groups reside on the ARTstor server and you can retrieve them each time you logon with your registration information. To create a group where you can save images:

- Select the images to save by clicking on them (they will be highlighted).
- Go to "Image Groups" on the menu bar."
- Open "Save Selected Images into Group."
- Select folder (My Work Folder should be the default).
- Choose to create a new group and name it.

To retrieve your image group from the main search page after you have logged in, select "My Image Group" and you will see your list of image groups. Click on the group you want to view. You may add to this image group or remove images.

Printing Images
Select an image. In the lower right-hand corner, click on the printer icon. The image and image information will appear. Click "Print". Your image will print as a large thumbnail or "post-card" along with the image information.

Offline Viewer
ARTstor offers an offline presentation tool that you can download, which allows you to save ARTstor images and display them at higher resolution. You can add other non-ARTstor images as well. You must register and logon to use this feature, and you must be logged in to ARTstor to import images into off-line groups. To download the Offline Viewer, from the home page, select "Tools/Offline Image Viewer Download." Follow the download and installation instructions.

To use the Offline Viewer, click on its icon. You may encounter an authentication dialog box, which will ask for your ARTstor login and password. To access your image groups, select "File/Import image(s)/Download image groups from ARTstor." You may be prompted to login again. You will then see an "ARTstor Image Group" dialog box. Double click on "My Work Folders"; you should see your image groups. Open your image group.
