15. Where can I get slides made?
1. Why can I only check out one book for one day?
Our circulation policy is very limited because we are primarily a browsing collection, with books that are image-intensive. Our users need to be able to access these materials. Art books that are text-heavy are kept at Sterling, where you can check out books for 2 months.
2. Why can't I check out a magazine?
You can't check out a magazine (current issue or back issue) because we need to have them available to everyone.
3. Why do you charge a late fee of $5 per day?
We charge a late fee of $5 per day because we are primarily a browsing collection and we want to encourage people to return their books promptly so that they can be available to other readers. Most art libraries don't let their books circulate at all.
4. Orbis says the book I want is checked out for a really long time. What does that mean?
It means that the book is either at the bindery or is checked out to someone's shelf or carrel. Ask at the circ desk to see which shelf it is on. If a book is on someone's shelf, you can still check out it out overnight - we ask that you keep the yellow slip in the book so that we can return it to the person's shelf.
Graduate students from the History of Art Department, the School of Art, and the School of Architecture may apply at the circulation desk for a shelf or carrel in the library. You can check books out to your shelf for an entire semester. Short-term (3 week) shelves are also available. All shelves and carrels are assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis. You may arrange with a friend to share a shelf, if you okay it with the circulation desk.
5. I'm looking in Orbis and it says the book is at LSF. What does that mean and how can I get the book?
LSF refers to the Library Shelving Facility, which is an off-campus storage building. The only way to get books from LSF is to request them through Eli Express. You can specify what library you want the book delivered to, and it should get there within 48 hours.
Note: Some LSF books are non-circulating and may be used only at specific libraries.
6. I need to scan something. What should I do?
We have a small scanner in our computer cluster, next to the computer nearest the reference stacks. We have written up instructions on how to use the scanner, which are posted next to it. You can also ask for assistance at the reference or circulation desks.
7. How do I print?
You may print if you have a printing account with the Bursar's office. You can set up an account and add money to it online, at the ITS Print Management Account page.
The A+A Library has one public printer, on the left hand side of the circulation desk. Print from whatever program you are using, then go to the printer. You will need to log in, with your NetID and password. It will list the jobs currently in the print queue. Select your job, and the cost will be deducted from your account.
8. Copier questions: Do you have a color copier? Why are your copiers always out of order? Why can't the library staff re-fill the toner for the copiers? Do you have change for copying?
No, we do not have a color copier. The only color photocopier in the library system is at the Medical Library
Our copiers get alot of use, which is why they are frequently out of order. However, our copy repair person does come promptly.
The library system has an agreeement with CBS Bloom's, the copy company, whereby they provide repair and regular maintenance service. We would be violating the agreement if our staff changed the toner.
We don't have a fine box, or any petty cash, so we can't make change for the copier. Your best bet is to try one of the stores on Chapel Street.
9. How many books can I put on the hold shelf?
You can put 5 books for 3 days on the hold shelf.
10. Do you have a map of the library? Of campus?
Right now we have a hard-to-read map of the library posted near the current journal issues. We are working on a clearer one that we can both post and hand out.
We have a map of campus on the left hand side of the circulation desk, underneath the reserves list.
11. Can I access electronic resources from home?
Yes. If your computer has a Yale IP address (i.e. you are in a dorm room) or you have a Yale PPP account, access is seamless. If you use AOL or another ISP, then you need to configure your browser using a proxy server. Once you have done this, you can access all of our electronic resources.
12. Where's the bathroom?
The bathrooms alternate by floors: women's on 1, 3, and 5; men's on 2, 4, and 6.
The closest women's bathroom is outside the library, to the right of the email workstation and across from the elevators.
The closest men's bathroom is on the 2nd floor, across from the elevators.
13. Where's Hastings Hall?
Hastings Hall is on the basement level of the A+A Building, one floor below the library.
14. How do I get into/out of the building?
The A+A Library is on the first floor of the A+A Building. When you are at the front of the building, you will see a set of steps. Enter through the door to the right of the steps. Once you are inside, keep going straight until you get to the elevators. The library will be to your left.
When exiting the building, walk out of the library and make a right. Keep going until you get to a door. That's the exit.
Note: Persons in wheelchairs may enter the library through the emergency entrance on Chapel Street. Use the blue phone to call the circulation desk (2-2645); our staff will turn off the alarm and let you in. For more information, consult the services for persons with disabilities page.
15. Where can I get slides made?
To get slides made, you can
-shoot your own
-have them done at the Photographic Services section of the Media Services department
In all cases, you are responsible for bringing the materials back to the library.
