This is an excellent index to pictures of sculpture. Listings are dictionary-style under the names of artists, titles, and subjects. Although the emphasis is on modern sculpture after 1900, all periods are represented. Entries include nationality and dates of sculptors, materials, size, museum identification numbers, and references to documents.

Havlice, Patricia Pate. Art in Time. Metuchen, N.J.: Scarecrow Press, 1970.

An index to all the pictures in the Art section of Time magazine. Each copy of Time, from the first number of volume one in 1923 to the last issue in 1969, has been included. The compilation is in one alphabetical sequence of artist's names and titles. Each entry by artist includes all the works appearing in Time, an indication of the type of work, and whether the image is in color of black and white. The volume, page, and date of the work's appearance in Time. There is no subject access, although the titles are often a guide to the subject of the work. Excellent resource for social history research.

This work was intended to supplement and update both works of Monro and Monro (Index to Reproductions of American Paintings), as it covers both European and American paintings, amoung others. Volume 1 is alphabetically arranged by name of artist and provides references to the books that contain the reproductions. Volume 2 is a title list that refers the user back to Volume 1. No subject access.

Kreisel, Martha. Photography Books Index: A Subject Guide to Photo Anthologies. Metuchen, N.J.: Scarecrow Press, 1980.

This important work identifies and locates thousands of photographs by indexing twenty-two major titles of photography anthologies. The work is organized into three major sections comprised of a listing of photographers alphabetically arranged, a subject listing based on Sears list of subject headings revealing topical matter contained in photographs, and a listing of portraits of named individuals, identifying children, men, and women alphabetically by name of model or sitter. These entries include dates, photographers, and sources of the pictures. Photography Books Index II, was published in 1985, and serves as a supplement to this volume, covering 1955-1982. Hundreds of personalities and classic photographs by masters of the camera are included.

Compiled by the professional staff of the Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library under the direction of Elizabeth W. Thomson. This volume indexes reproductions to art works (paintings, sculpture, graphic art, photography, stage design, and architecture) in a selected group of books published between 1956 and 1971. Although an older volume, it is one of the only indexes to reproductions that covers both two-dimensional and three-dimensional art works. It is arranged by a name index, an alphabetical list of artists and their works, and a title index, an alphabetical list of all works included. No subject access.

Some 7,000 illustrations of buildings and plans culled from 108 important books are indexed in this source. Indexing is detailed and access is possible by site, architect, architectural type, and variant names of the structures depicted in the reproductions. The emphasis is on western architecture, although the scope and coverage is global. The work is divided into four major sections; site index (by city), architect index (individuals and firms) with brief biographical information, building types, and finally names and alternative names of structures.

This has become a standard tool for identification of photographs, maps, and drawings in eight to ten popular periodicals as well as a selective listing of books. Several supplements have followed to provide continuous coverage, and have been labeled as editions. Illustration Index III, by Roger G. Greer (Scarecrow Press, 1973), covers the period July 1963 to December 1971, whereas Illustration Index IV, by Marsha Appel (Scarecrow Press, 1980) identifies some 35,000 illustrations in nine magazines between 1982-1986. A variety of subjects , such as animals, architecture, plants, Indians, furniture, personalities are covered. The arrangement is by only by subject (no artist or title access) and each entry contains the source and a description of the type of illustration.

Electronic Resources

American Memory
The American Memory Historical Collections, a major component of the Library's National Digital Library Program, are multimedia collections of digitized documents, photographs, recorded sound, moving pictures, and text from the Library's Americana collections. There are currently more than 90 collections in the American Memory Historical Collections.

Artcyclopedia
Artcyclopedia is a database that can be searched by artist name, title of work, or museum name. Results include links to museums and art galleries, image archives, other web sites, and articles.

Associated Press Photo Archive
The Photo Archive is an electronic library containing the AP's current photos and a selection of pictures from their 50 million image print and negative library. Yale has a limited number of simultaneous users, so please be sure to use the logout link when exiting.

Ditto.com
Ditto.com is a visual search engine of the Internet.

Grove Dictionary of Art
The entire dictionary is on online, with links to museum web sites and many images from the Bridgeman Art Library.

Index of Christian Art
The Index, produced at Princeton University, can presently provide access to complex information on approximately 200,000 photographic reproductions of Christian art in the east and west from early apostolic times up to 1400 A.D. The term Christian is broadly construed and by no means restricted to art produced within ecclesiastical contexts or theological in theme. Classical Gods, crocodiles and comets are all included in the Index if found in a Christian context.

MFA Online Collections
The following pages represent a selection of object records from the MFA's collection. They are organized by department, and often by category within a department. These pages will be updated and new records will be added weekly. This launch of approximately 15,000 object records (in December 2000) focuses on two areas: objects in all media which were acquired by the Museum after 1933 and made before 1945 which were or could have been in areas of Europe occupied by the Nazis during the Holocaust/ World War II era artifacts acquired by the Museum in modern times.

National Gallery of Art
Locate works of art by artist, title, subject, or other criteria. Images of more than 4,700 objects in the National Gallery's collection and approximately 10,600 related details are available. New images are added continually. Text and/or data on all of the more than 100,000 objects in the Gallery's collection can be found using various search capabilities.

National Graphic Design Image Database
The National Graphic Design Image Database at Cooper Union is an on-line system under development at the Herb Lubalin Study Center of Design and Typography in the School of Art. The Image Database is designed to electronically preserve and disseminate material related to the history of visual communication in the twentieth century. The project aims to build a virtual visual encyclopedia through an electronic community of students and educators.

Photographic Libraries
The stock images, film and photo archives listed provide a creative source for television producers, advertising agencies, libraries, education centres, picture researchers and media services researching visual communications. The photographic library and archival resource contains national and private photographic collections.Photographic Libraries is a member of the G.E.M community an initiative sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education.

The Photo Archive of the New York Daily News
One of the largest photo archives on the web, this site is a great place to go when looking for images.

SPIRO Database
SPIRO Database is put out by the Architecture Slide Library at the University of California, Berkeley. Names of architects must be searched for in last name, first name order (i.e. Wright, Frank Lloyd).

The Thinker ImageBase
The Thinker ImageBase is a searchable image and text database of objects from the collections of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (the de Young Museum and the Legion of Honor). The collections (110,000+ objects) belong to the people of the City and County of San Francicso. The ImageBase is an expression of the Museum's mission to provide meaningful public access to the collections and behave more like a resource and less like a repository.
