Notes: This annual publication gathers auction information from 450 auctioneers. Information is arranged alphabetically by artist and entries include birth/deat date, nationality, hammer price, title of artwork, dimensions, auction date, auctioneer, lot number, and sale estimate. Covers only works sold above a certain price. A good resource for recent auction information.

Note: This annual publication contains over 3,000 international public auction sales. Auction results are converted into francs, pounds, euros, and dollars. Mayer's is a good source of current auction information on artists whose works sell in lower price ranges. A fee-based subscription is available online at www.guidemayer.com.

Notes: Online catalog of North American and European auction catalogs which also contains information on provenance research, the history of collecting, and contemporary and historical art market trends. Allows user to search by auction house, seller, date of sale, sale code, and Lugt/Lancour numbers (see above). Entries include date of sale, location of sale, catalog title, auction house, sellers, and institutional holdings.

Notes: Fee-based resource (paid subscription is required for price estimates and auction results). This database includes more than six million auction record entries. Resources include links to major auction houses and upcoming auctions. A "simple search" retrieves results that include lot numbers, sale title, artwork title, medium, dimensions, date, auction house, and date of past auctions. Additional information can be viewed when user subscribes to the website. All upcoming auction information is free.

Notes: Fee-based resource (paid subscription is required for auction results, upcoming auctions and auction sales graphs). This database contains information on over 42,000 American artists. The website is divided into two sections: Research and Marketplace. In the Research area, users can access information on an particular artist including quick fact, book references, image examples, current exhibitions, permanent collections, magazine references. In the Marketplace area, information regarding the artists' auction results, upcoming auctions, and auction sales graph. Additionally, the site contains essays on art styles, a glossary of art terms, and directories of art dealers, museums and auction houses.

Notes: Fee-based resource. This database offers 21 million auction prices and information on 309,000 artists, 2,900 auction houses, 270,000 auction catalogs and 36,000 signatures. Unlike Askart and Artfact, this resource offers very little free information. With a subscription, users can access auction information on a specific artwork, including title, auction results, medium, size, date, auction location and house, lot number, signature and reproduction. For a fee, auction research and images can be provided. Good research on lower priced auctions.

Notes: Fee-based resource. This website can be used to access images of artwork and artist biographies and exhibition histories. For a fee, users can access the Price Databases, which provides information on 2.7 million fine art auction records. The database can be searched by artist name/auction house, medium, title, date, price range, and sale date. No items are listed that are valued under $300. The website also includes a free newsletter.

Getty Provenance Index Databases: Sale Catalogs

Dates Covered: 1650-1840

Contents:
Notes: Focusing specifically on sales catalogs, this database is one of three offered by the Getty (the other two focus on archival documents and public collections). The database includes sales catalogs from Belgium, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands, and Scandinavia. Users can search by keyword, artist name and nationality, lot title, buyer/seller name, auction house, city of sale, country of sale, date of sale and Lugt number. Returned results include a link to a description of the sale catalog. Locations for sale catalogs are provided.
