Books |
Orbis is the Yale University library
online catalog. Use Orbis to determine what materials Yale owns (books,
journals, etc.) and where they are located.
TIP #1: You will not find articles
in Orbis, only journal titles. For articles use the Avery Index.
TIP #2: When doing keyword seaches
you MUST use AND, OR, NOT logic. See below for details.
Keyword Searching
Try to think of words that are specific
to your topic (such as "rococo architecture" and Italy) and not too general
(rococo). Think of multiple ways to describe what you want. A keyword search
requires Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) or quotes.
Use quotes for exact phrases
"washington monument"
Combine keywords to narrow your search
photographs and "zaha hadid"
"eiffel tower" and construction
(architecture and Belgium) not antwerp
You can also use truncation
architectur? picks up "architecture"
and "architectural"
Subject
Searching
When you search by subject, you
can search by a very broad concept (architecture) to a very narrow one
(biographies of Maine architects). You must put your search words in a
particular order, and you cannot use AND, OR, NOT.
Some ways to structure a search
Type of art or artist--Country
Type of art or artist--Country--Concept
Type of art or artist--Concept--Publication
Type
Type of art or artist--Publication
Type
Name of artist or architect
Name of artist or architect--Publication

Examples
architecture--united states
architecture--japan--history
architects--homes and haunts--dictionaries
architects--directories
meier richard
le corbusier 1887-1965--exhibitions
Note: the dashes (--) between words
are optional.
Limiting Searches
The "More Limits" button takes you
to a screen where you can set limits to your search. These limits stay
in effect for subsequent searches unless you clear them.
You can limit by:
-
Language
-
Library or collection
-
Date
-
Medium (such as a map or videorecording)
-
Item type (such as manuscript and archival
material or musical scores)
| Finding Articles
|
TIP #1: As in Orbis, both keyword
and subject searching work in the Architectural Index and in the Avery
Index.
TIP #2: To find the actual article
in the Yale Library after finding the citation in Architectural Index or
in Avery, you have to search Orbis for the title of the journal.
For instance, to find the following article:
Robert A.M. Stern: the architect's
creation stands tall in Manhattan / Steven M.L. Aaron.
photos., ports. In: Architectural digest 2002 Sept., v.59, n.9, p.[196]-[203],289.
Do a title search in Orbis for Architectural
Digest.
Architectural
Index: Boulder, Colorado.
Database coverage 1982-present
Available online from the Arts Library
web page under Search for Articles
An index to architects,
designers, and architectural firms. Less scholarly than the Avery Index,
but great for architect information.
Avery
Index: Los Angeles, Calif.: Getty Information Institute.
Database coverage 1934-present
ART/ARCHITECTURE Reference, Index
Z5945 +C65 1973 (LC)
Also available online in a web and
telnet version from the Arts Library web page under Search for Articles
The Avery Index covers architectural
history, theory, and practice, as well as landscape design, historic preservation,
urban planning, and the built environment generally. Very scholarly index
to peer-reviewed literature.
| Finding
Images |
TIP #1: Use both print and electronic resources for finding images.
TIP #2: Often journal articles will contain images. Citations in the Avery Index will indicate if there are images, plans, elevations, maps, etc.
