Yale's circulation policies are designed to permit prompt and equitable access to library materials. Staff at the Haas Family Arts Library is focused on meeting the research needs of the library's readers. Registered students, faculty, staff and affiliates of Yale University may borrow library materials.
Library privileges are available to researchers not affiliated with Yale. Those not associated with Yale who wish to borrow materials from the library collections must register in person at the Privileges Office (located in Sterling Memorial Library Nave,) Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:45 p.m. On Saturdays, assistance with privileges is offered at the Sterling Memorial Library Circulation Desk from 10:00 a.m. - 4:45 p.m.
There are several different collections housed within the Haas Family Arts Library, all of which have different circulation periods. Other collections, namely the Reference Collections, Art & Architecture Periodicals Collection and the Arts Library Special Collections (ALSC) do not circulate at all. Art & Architecture Collections
- Students and staff may check out one A&A book at a time for one day.
- All Art & Architecture materials can only be returned to the Haas Arts Library. Books returned to other Yale Libraries will be subject to late fees.
- Faculty may check out up to 5 books at a time for one week.
- All borrowed materials are subject to recall. The date due slip in each book is the only notice patrons will receive before fines are assessed.
Renewals
- Yale students, staff, and affiliates with valid Yale NetIDs may renew one Art & Architecture online through Orbis up to three times. After which, the book must but returned or renewed again onsite by library staff.

Exceptions to online renewals:
- You must renew your book before 11:59 PM on the day that it is due.
- Recalled books cannot be renewed. If your title is recalled, you must return it immediately to the Haas Arts Library.
- No renewals for patrons with blocked library accounts.

Drama Collections
- Drama’s regularly circulating books circulate for 2 months to all patrons: faculty, students, staff and affiliates.
- Drama materials with LC classification call numbers are integrated with the Haas Arts Library Art and Architecture collections.
- Regular sized materials are located in the compact shelving on the lower level.
- Oversized materials are located on the upper level.
- Reference materials are located at the beginning of the Oversized collection on the upper level.
Non-LC Classified Drama Materials
- Books: There are several ranges of non-LC classified books that are shelved at the end of the regular sized LC collection. They are located in the lower level of Haas Arts library in the compact shelving area. These are regularly circulating books that are shelved separately. They do not have (LC) on the call number.
Bound Periodicals
- The majority of Drama Collection bound periodicals are circulating.
Non-Circulating Drama Materials
- Reference materials are located at the beginning of the Oversized collection on the upper level.
- The majority of scripts in the drama collection are non-circulating and under the responsibility of the Special Collections Department and housed at the LSF.
- Drama collection theses and dissertations are under the responsibility of Arts Library Special Collections. Most are shelved at the LSF. The most recent two years are located in Haas Arts Library Special Collections.
- The overdue fine for Art materials is $5 per day per title.
- If you return art and architecture materials to another library on campus, you will accrue fines until the book is returned to Haas Arts Library. If you have a question about your fine, please contact the main circulation desk, 432-2645.
- Closed Reserve fines are $5 per hour.
- Drama fines are $.50/day (to a max of $15.00).
- Drama 2-hour and 24-hour reserve books are $.05/minute or $3.00/hour (to a max of $25.00).
- Drama 3-day reserves are $2.00/day (to a max of $25.00)
- The Haas Family Arts Library is open to the public Monday-Friday from 8:30am- 5pm, with the exception of scheduled holiday closings. Please see the library hours calendar to plan your visit.
- The general collection, reference collection, and current periodical collection is available to browse in open stacks. Back issue periodicals are available within the book stacks arranged by LC call number.
- There are two public computer terminals available for non-Yale scholars and visitors near the Service Desk at a standing counter. Guest Wi-Fi service is available for your laptop throughout the library space.
- More than 75% of materials owned by the Haas Arts Library are stored offsite or in other libraries on Yale's campus. Please search ORBIS, Yale's online catalog, before visiting to insure that the item you need is in the Haas Arts Library stacks.
- If an item is located offsite or another library on campus please contact the Haas Arts staff or a Reference Librarian at least 3 business days before your visit and your item will be available by appointment.
