Archival Collections and the Yale Finding Aid Database

Archival collections are described in a collection level record in Orbis.  Some collections are extensive and are also described in more detail in a Finding Aid.  The Arts Library's finding aids are part of the Yale Finding Aid Database, which collects and makes accessible finding aids from many libraries at Yale.  The Finding Aid Database allows a researcher to browse by repository or perform a variety of searches to discover materials at the Arts Library or other Yale repositories. The finding aids can be viewed as a web page or in PDF format. Once the researcher has identified the desired Arts Library Special Collections materials, s/he can fill out a General Request Form.

Reproduction Policy

When condition permits, reproductions of materials in the collections can be made by ALSC staff. In some cases, copyright restrictions apply. For detailed information on costs and size restrictions, consult the full policy in PDF format.

If students are consulting ALSC materials placed on reserve for a class in which they are enrolled, the rate of photocopying will be reduced to the same as the public access machines (currently $0.15 per page). Sales tax is still applicable to this transaction (currently 6.35%).

If faculty need digital images for teaching purposes, the request must be made through the Visual Resources Collection (VRC), next door to the ALSC Reading Room. ALSC staff will work with VRC staff to make ALSC materials available for reproduction. ALSC reserves the right to prohibit the reproduction of fragile or light-sensitive items.
