To
borrow a Bass Library book,
present a Yale University ID or Yale Library-issued Privileges card at the circulation desk of Bass Library or Sterling Memorial Library.
Renew, Request materials from other Yale libraries (Eli
Express), or Place
Requests
Renew Bass Library books from Orbis by logging on to Place Requests and selecting Renew from the drop down menu. Reserve items can not be renewed.
Recall or Request Bass Library books from Orbis by logging
on to Place Requests and selecting Recall or Request staff search or delivery from the drop down menu. Reserve items can not be requested through Place Requests.

Circulation Information for Bass Library Books
Loan
periods:
- 1 year for faculty
- 6 months for non-reserve items for graduate students
- 3 weeks for non-reserve items for all others
- 3 days or 24 hours for Reserve
Items
- 2 hours, in-building for Closed
Reserve
- Reserve loans are restricted to students and faculty.
Locating
Books:
- Non-reserve,
24-hour, and 3-day reserve
books are on the open shelves in the Bass Library stacks.
- Closed
Reserve Materials must be requested by call number
at the Bass Library Circulation Desk.
A list of all current materials on Closed Reserve is available
through Orbis (use the Closed
Reserve tab). Search by Instructor, Department or Course.
- Group and individual study rooms are located in Bass Library.
You may make arrangements to charge books to carrels
or shelves, as long as they are not on reserve. To retrieve a
book which is on a carrel or shelf, log on to Orbis, click on Place Requests, and choose Recall from the drop
down menu.
- Eli
Express allows Yale Library users to return, check out
or renew books at participating
libraries; books may also be requested from and delivered
to other libraries. Art Library materials are not eligible for Eli Express or by using Place Requests.
- Recalls may be placed on non-reserve books which are out on loan to other
patrons.
- When
books are not on the shelf or
Orbis shows them as 'missing' or 'billed' click on Place Requests and select Request Staff Search or Delivery from the drop
down menu. If a second window opens fill in the information about
the book and submit the request.
Loan
Restrictions
- 24-hour
and 3-day Books may be borrowed at any time of day. 24-hour
reserve books are due within 24 hours as shown on the due slip.
3-day reserve books are due at any time within 3 days. Only faculty
and students may borrow reserve materials. You may use Self-Check
Out to charge reserve books but they cannot be renewed. Reserve items can not be requested through Place Requests.
- Non-reserve
Books may be renewed, unless requested by another reader,
by logging on to Place Requests in Orbis and selecting Renew from the drop down menu.
Date
Due Slips
A
printed slip, showing the date and time when the
book is due and the barcode of the book is placed in the back
of each book. The guards will check this slip when you leave the library. If you renew a book, you will need to get a new due date slip if you bring the book in to the library and expect to take it out the door again.
Please note the due date (and time, when applicable). It is the
responsibility of the borrower check the date on this slip, and
to return borrowed materials on time.
