Purpose and eligibility:
The beautiful and integrated environments of Bass Library and the adjoining areas in the Sterling Memorial Library basement are designed to foster discovery, teaching and learning. 14 Group Study Rooms and 2 Classrooms are available to facilitate dynamic interactions among Yale students, faculty and staff. These rooms are for the use of people affiliated with Yale University, and can be accessed using a current Yale ID proxy card. Eight of them may be reserved for such activities as consultations, tutoring, practice sessions for presentations, DVD film viewings, or meetings among teaching fellows and students or course supporters and faculty. They are not intended to be used for social functions.
In addition, Yale University registered student organizations may use the classrooms and group study rooms for meetings free of charge. There may be charges for audio visual, custodial, or security services, as noted below.

During the academic term, the hours of entry to these libraries are as follows:
Sterling Memorial Library:
Mon - Thurs 8:30 a.m. - 11:45 p.m.
Fri 8:30 a.m. - 4:45 p.m.
Sat 10:00 a.m. - 4:45 p.m.
Sun Noon - 1:45 a.m.
Bass Library:
Mon - Thurs 8:30 a.m. - 1:45 a.m.
Fri 8:30 a.m. - 9:45 p.m.
Sat 10:00 a.m. - 6:45 p.m.
Sun Noon - 11:45 p.m.

Rules for Use of the Building [including Classrooms and Group Study Rooms]
· Classroom and Group Study Room users must respect others using the Library by:
* Consuming food only in the Thain Family Café or The Selin Courtyard.
NO FOOD IS PERMITTED ELSEWHERE IN THE BASS LIBRARY OR STERLING MEMORIAL LIBRARY. Non-alcoholic beverages may be taken into any part of the Library in approved, spill-proof containers.
* Respecting the Library’s quiet environment, by limiting noise. Use of cell phones and pagers should be kept to a minimum.
- You are welcome to bring cameras into the Library but please be aware that the University does not permit photography or filming for commercial purposes inside any University building. See the Library’s policy on Photographing or Filming in Library Buildings for details.
- Posters must be placed only on bulletin boards in designated locations. Advertising is not permitted elsewhere in the libraries.
- Bicycles, rollerblades, skateboards are not permitted inside libraries.
- No smoking is permitted anywhere inside the libraries or within 20 feet of building entrances.
Rules for Use of Classrooms and Group Study Rooms in the Library
- Food is NOT permitted in classrooms or group study rooms. Non-alcoholic beverages may be taken into the Library class and study rooms only in approved spill-proof containers.
- Reservations are required for the use of the 2 classrooms in the Bass Library and may be requested for times they are not scheduled for university classes. Reservations are available to Yale faculty, students and staff for course-related activities through the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Classroom Reservation System.
- Entry to each room requires use of a current Yale University ID proxy card by the person for whom the room is reserved. Doors should not be propped open.
- Each room has been furnished for safe egress of its designated maximum capacity. Please do not bring additional chairs or other furniture into a room. Return rooms to their original configuration before leaving.
- Colored chalk and wet markers may not be used on writing surfaces. Please use only the chalk, dry-eraser markers, erasers, and cleaning fluid that are provided in rooms.
- Please leave lights ON when leaving the room.
- The person who reserves a classroom is responsible for its use and care. Rooms should be left in the same condition as found and cleared of any debris.
Any charges that are assessed for damages or excessive cleaning may be passed on
to the individual who has reserved the room.
- No computers are provided in these rooms, but you are welcome to bring your own.
- Audio Visual equipment is available in each classroom and group study room. See the listing of what each room has through the reservation system. Groups requiring additional AV services should contact Media Services well in advance of any session. Please note that fees are assessed for the provision of audio visual services.
- The Library rooms are not designed for conferences or large group meetings. However, use of these rooms to supplement a campus event may be reserved when there is not heavy demand for them. All undergraduate organizations must also comply with the Undergraduate Regulations. Yale registered undergraduate organizations planning conferences or large meetings and requesting multiple rooms must have clearance through the Yale College Dean’s Office and the Library Office of Public Services before requesting use of any of the Library rooms for conferences.
Reservations and Cancellations
- Requests for a reservation must be submitted at least one working day ahead of the date the room is sought, and no more than 6 months.
- Reservations are not honored until a confirmation email is sent from the FAS Classroom Reservation System.
- Schedules of reserved hours of use are posted by the Library Office of Public Services at the start of each day at each room that is eligible to be reserved. When there is no reserved time posted, groups of at least 3 persons with a current Yale proxy ID card may use the room for academic-related purposes as described above.
- If it is necessary to cancel a confirmed reservation, please do so no later than noon the working day prior to the event by entering the confirmation number and a note through the FAS Classroom Reservation System.
For your Security
- University or Library-issued identification is necessary to enter either the Sterling Memorial or Bass Library after 6 p.m.
- Whenever you are concerned about your safety when leaving the building, escorts to vehicles or other buildings may be requested through 432-9255.
- PLEASE WATCH YOUR PERSONAL POSSESSIONS. Lockers in the Bass Library are available to Yale students and faculty through the Bass Library Office on the concourse level.
