2008-2009 JAMES M. OSBORN POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP

Application Requirements

The Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library at Yale University invites applications for a newly defined James M. Osborn Post-doctoral Research Fellowship in British Studies. The fellowship, for the academic year 2008-2009, is open to scholars of British history, literature, society or culture in any period from the Middle Ages through the end of the Twentieth Century who will devote the term of the fellowship to research in the Beinecke Library's extensive collection of books, manuscripts, prints, and original art concerning the literature, history, and culture of the British Isles. The twelve month fellowship provides a stipend of $42,500 and a residential apartment within walking distance of the Library. The Osborn Fellow will be expected to take up residence in New Haven between July 1 and (no later than) August 1, 2008, to conduct research in Beinecke Library on a consistent basis, and to participate in the intellectual life of the Yale community through June 30, 2009. Applicants must have received their Ph.D. (or equivalent degree) between September 1, 2001 and January 14, 2008.

The Fellowship will be awarded on the basis of the applicant's scholarly qualifications and promise as well as the merits and significance of the research to be undertaken at Beinecke Library.

The postmark deadline for submission of application materials is January 15, 2008.

Applicants are asked to submit the following items to the Director of the Beinecke Library:

  • an Osborn application form
  • a curriculum vitae
  • a 1500-word essay describing the applicant's research interests, including a detailed discussion of the relevance of Beinecke collections to the applicant's larger project
  • three confidential letters of recommendation (clearly indicating the James M. Osborn Post-doctoral Fellowship designation) sent directly to the Library from scholars acquainted with the applicant's research and writing
  • At the top of each page of application material, please include a header clearly indicating the name of the applicant and the James M. Osborn Post-doctoral Fellowship designation
