FELLOWSHIPS FOR YALE GRADUATE AND PROFESSIONAL STUDENTS

General Information and Frequently Asked Questions

Deadlines: All application materials must be postmarked by the application deadline.

Recommendation Letters: Recommenders may send letters directly to the Beinecke Director, or seal and sign the envelope across the back for the student to include in the application packet.

  • Signature and Letterhead: Letters must include a signature for final consideration, and should ideally be written on official letterhead.

  • Scanned letters: A signed letter may be scanned and emailed as a PDF to beinecke.fellowships@yale.edu.

  • Fax: Signed letters may be faxed to the Fellowship Program at 203-432-4047.
Please DO NOT have recommenders send multiple letters.

Applications are accepted via regular post, express mail, and hand delivery (please see below for details). Applications are not accepted by email.

Beginning and end dates for SEMESTER FELLOWSHIPS are as follows:

  • Fall Term: 01-SEP-XX through 15-JAN-XX. (The library is closed September 5, November 24-25, and December 22-30, 2011)

  • Spring Term: 16-JAN-XX through 31-MAY-XX. (The library is open during spring recess)

  • Summer Term: 01-JUN-XX through 31-AUG-XX.

When are the awards announced? Awards are typically announced 6-8 weeks after the application deadline.

I am a professional school student; what is a DGS? A DGS refers to Graduate School students; it is the Director of Graduate Studies.

I don’t have a dissertation advisor/DGS, who can send a letter? Your research advisor for your culminating project can send a letter of recommendation.

MFA student; I don’t have a “dissertation topic” or “dissertation advisor”, what should I put in those application fields? Please use your departmental equivalent in those fields.

I am completing a joint degree, and thus, I have two DGSs. Do I need to submit letters of recommendation from both DGSs? Yes, please submit a letter from each DGS or advisor you may have.

I am a first-year student – am I eligible for a pre prospectus fellowship? Yes, first year Graduate and Professional school students are eligible.

I am a professional school student, am I eligible for a pre-prospectus fellowship? Only first year students are eligible for a pre-prospectus fellowship. Please be aware that if you are awarded a pre-prospectus fellowship then you are ineligible for a future research fellowship.

I am graduating in May. Am I still eligible to apply for a summer fellowship to continue a current work in progress? No, you are not eligible.

Do you offer fellowships to graduate student scholars from other universities? We currently do not offer our Graduate and Professional Student fellowships to non-Yale students.

Can I submit my application materials through Interfolio? No, we do not subscribe to Interfolio.

Would it be okay for me to send in my application materials via email? In an emergency, application materials may be submitted via email, but applicants must strictly adhere to our guidelines. To submit via email, all materials must be scanned into one PDF file. The order of materials must be, 1) Application, 2) CV, 3) Proposal, and 4) List of research materials. Recommendation letters are to be submitted separately and must come from the recommender. Multiple attachments and/or attachments that are not in PDF format WILL NOT be accepted.

I’m afraid my application materials will be late; will my application still be considered? As long as all application materials are postmarked by the deadline, your application will be considered.
