Clyde Milner II

Clyde A. Milner II is director of the Ph.D. program in Heritage Studies and professor of history at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. Milner completed his Ph.D. in American Studies at Yale
University following undergraduate studies in his hometown of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Known for his research, writing, and editing on the history of the American West and on Native American history, Milner now applies his interest in American regionalism and cultural identity to the Mississippi Delta and the interdisciplinary, public sector initiatives of Heritage Studies. At the start of its sixth year of existence, Heritage Studies has thirty-eight doctoral students actively enrolled in the program. Six people have already completed the Ph.D.

Before coming to Arkansas State in 2002, Milner served on the faculty at Utah State University in Logan. For eighteen of his twenty-six years there, he edited the Western Historical Quarterly. He has written or edited seven books most notably The Oxford History of the American West (1994) a prize-winning volume that he co-edited with his wife, Dr. Carol O’Connor and with Dr. Martha A. Sandweiss of Amherst College. Both Milner and O’Connor are listed as Distinguished Lecturers by the Organization of American Historians. Clyde Milner II and Carol A. O'Connor will spend the 2006-2007year at the Beinecke Library jointly researching a biography of Granville Stuart, a quintessential nineteenth-century pioneer of the American West.
