PLANNING YOUR RESEARCH VISIT All Yale University students and faculty, and other researchers whose work requires use of its collections are welcome to study at the Beinecke. Yale community readers need only bring their Yale ID to register by card swipe. New non-Yale library patrons may register onsite or pre-register online at http://www.library.yale.edu/beinecke/brblinfo/register.html . Please bring two forms of identification with recent photographs and a current address to validate your pre-registration. Undergraduates not enrolled in Yale College who are interested in manuscripts or archival collections should present a letter of introduction from their academic advisor or college librarian. Permission is required for access to some materials. NOTE: Certain collections may be closed for processing. Please consult the Closed Collections Schedule, also available from the Beinecke homepage, for a list of closed archival collections. New Beinecke Library Shelving Facility As part of its ongoing commitment to improve research capabilities by increasing and preserving its collections, the Beinecke Library has created a state-of-the-art off-site shelving facility to house our growing manuscript and book collections. As a result, some collections now housed off-site must be paged at least 36 hours in advance for use in the Library’s reading room. Collections housed in the new shelving facility will be identified in Orbis, the Library’s catalog, with the following information “LSF-Request for Use at Beinecke Rare Book Library.” Requests must be made with the Beinecke Library Access Services Department by email to beinecke.library@yale.edu . Please be sure to include the call number, author and title of the item(s) you wish to view and include in the subject line of your email, “LSF request.” Contact the Access Services Desk for more information: 203-432-2972 or beinecke.library@yale.edu. Beinecke is a non-circulating, closed stack library. Paging is done during business hours. The Public Services staff accepts completed call slips at the library's service desk. Upon request of the researcher, the staff retrieves materials within twenty minutes. Material from other Yale collections can be paged for use in the Beinecke reading room only. For more information about paging from other Yale collections, refer to the description of the ELI Express and LSF Retrieval services. Please consult the reading room rules prior to visiting the library. The reading room is reserved for the use of the library's collections by registered researchers. All library materials must be handled with great care to ensure their safety and preservation. All research areas are accessible to the handicapped. Researchers are encouraged to bring their own laptop computers or they may borrow a laptop from the Public Services Desk. The library's laptops are equipped with wireless technology linking Yale affiliates to the university's computer network. Researchers are encouraged to acquaint themselves with the library's holdings by reading the Overview of Collections and the Guide to Research Tools . Yale University Library's on-line catalog Orbis , and databases devoted to new acquisitions and manuscripts and archival materials provide descriptions of the library's books and archives. Researchers may use these on-line resources to gather preliminary information needed to identify and locate materials relevant to their work. Curators and public services librarians are available by request for reference consultations. The Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library is located on the Yale University campus near downtown New Haven, Connecticut. The city hosts a variety of lodging and directions options for local, national, and international researchers. |
