LIBRARY REPRODUCTION POLICIES
To assist scholars in
their research, the Library offers a wide range of photo duplication
services for materials in its collections, including digital scans in high resolution TIFFs, medium resolution JPEGs, or color PDFs. We also offer microfilm and reproductions of audio-visual
materials (See prices below for a listing of all services).
All reproduction requests are subject to review by the Beinecke Access Services staff. The library reserves the right to reject a reproduction request if the material is determined to be too fragile for reproduction.
Readers must identify and select all
material for duplication. Orders placed in person must be flagged
according to Library procedures; please inquire at the Service Desk for
instructions. Please be aware that the Library can fill large or complex
orders on a case-by-case basis only. A $25.00 per hour fee will be added
to any request that requires special handling or to any order that requires
the staff to spend more than thirty minutes conducting bibliographic research or more than sixty
minutes preparing the material for duplication. A separate fee may be applied to commercial orders.
All reproductions (regardless of format or subject matter) are
intended for readers' individual scholarly use. Copies of Beinecke library
material should not be deposited in other library collections or
institutions. In some cases, the Library may require the return of the
copies when the need for their use has ended.
CLOSED & UNPROCESSED COLLECTIONS
All archival collections at the
Beinecke are closed during processing. Please see our Currently
Closed Collections and Collections
to be Closed lists to plan your visit or reproduction requests.
These lists are subject to change and will be updated regularly.
*Beinecke Library may be unable to accommodate reproduction
requests prior to and during the closing of a
collection.
*Unprocessed collections may
not be available for microfilming.
PERMISSIONS & COPYRIGHT
The
Library's sale of a reproduction does not imply an authorization to
publish it. It is the reader's responsibility to obtain permission to
publish texts and facsimiles from the owners of the copyright. See
Library's Permissions
and Copyright page for more detailed information.
ORDERING
To place a remote request for reproductions of any
kind, email: beinecke.images@yale.edu.
Please include as much bibliographic information as possible, including
title, author, and call number.
Advance payment by check, Visa, or MasterCard
is required for all orders. Depending on the reproduction format, different rates may apply for members of the Yale community (students, faculty, staff, and Beinecke Fellows) and visiting scholars. Refer to the pricing chart for details. Please make checks payable to Yale University and include the order number on the check and on
all correspondence concerning this request; credit card numbers may be
faxed or emailed to the Library. If additional payment is required, a bill
will be sent with the shipment. Overseas customers paying by check must
send payment in U.S. dollars drawn on a U. S. bank.
Turn-around time is dependent upon the complexity
of the order and the format of the reproduction. Normal turn-around time is two to six weeks, although some formats can be
produced in a shorter period of time. It is extremely important that readers discuss the time-line for
reproduction orders with our staff if a deadline is involved.
The Library does not offer rush services but always handles requests in the order in which they are received.
Large microfilm orders or material requiring
conservation treatment may result in a turn-around of several months.
Prices below do not include shipping and handling fees. Standard shipping for items weighing less than one pound is $5 for domestic orders and $15 for international orders. Alternate shipping arrangements will require special pricing.

ACCESS TO ELECTRONIC
FILES IN MANUSCRIPT COLLECTIONS
Permission to examine: Permission to examine electronic files (often referred to as "born digital" files) in manuscript collections will be
granted to qualified scholars upon application. Permission is granted
subject to whatever restrictions were placed on the files by donors or
depositors.
Security of files: The Library
will provide access to copies of electronic files in manuscript
collections in accordance with federal copyright legislation set forth in
Title 17, Chapter 1. Reference copies of files are available on CDs and
may be viewed with emulation software (Quick View Plus) at public
workstations or on laptops in the Reading Room.
Copyright: Permission to
examine electronic files or printed copies of files is not an
authorization to publish. If the text or image in question is under
copyright, permission to publish should be sought from the owners of
rights, typically the creator or the heirs to his or her estate. It is not
necessary to seek the Library’s permission to publish texts of images
(unless the Library is identified as the copyright holder.) The Beinecke
Library should, however, be cited as the source.
Reproduction &
Distribution: In accordance with copyright legislation, Title 17,
Chapter 1, electronic files may not be copied or distributed in electronic
form outside the Library. To assist scholars in their research, the
Library will consider requests for printed copies. |
